F1 racing teams produce anti-Covid-19 medical devices

Seven F1 racing teams responded to the UK government’s call for assistance in the production of medical equipment, while Ferrari contributed to the pandemic in Italy.

Seven racing teams are based in the UK, including Haas, McLaren, Mercedes, Racing Point, Red Bull, Renault and Williams. They partnered with F1 to implement the Pitlane Project, helping the British government in the production of medical devices.

This project focuses on three main workloads, with different scopes. The first is to produce current medical devices using reverse engineering. The second is to support increased production of ventilators at the request of the government. Pitland also designed quickly, created a prototype of a new device, then registered and produced it.

In its official announcement, F1 outlines how the teams will use the expertise of each team to help the country in this difficult time.

In each workflow, Pitlane will gather the resources and competencies of each member racing team, focusing on the core capabilities of F1 such as fast design, prototype making, testing and assembly. F1’s unique ability to respond quickly to technical and technological challenges allows its team to become familiar with the requirements of the engineering equipment manufacturing industry.

The sudden increase in the number of nCoV infections in the UK has led to a shortage of ventilators. Last week, the government called on the industry to help meet its goal of producing 30,000 new ventilators in the coming months. According to the Telegraph, this device can reduce 50% of the critical cases caused by Covid-19.

The Mercedes racing team is working with engineers from the University of London, connecting with clinicians at University Hospital London (ULCH) to manufacture positive airway pressure devices (CPAP), providing oxygen to the lungs without ventilator.

Forty new devices have been shipped to ULCH and three other hospitals in London. If the tests go well, Mercedes can produce up to 1,000 CPAPs per day.

Ferrari has also used technical expertise to assist the Italian government against the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as donating 10 million euros in support of the Italian Civil Protection Department.
